Book Review: The One World Schoolhouse
Tutoring is intimate. You talk with someone, not at someone.A free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere: this is the goal of the Khan Academy, a passion project that grew from an ex-engineer and hedge funder’s online tutoring sessions with his niece, who was struggling with algebra, into a worldwide phenomenon. Today millions of students, parents, and teachers use the Khan Academy’s free videos and software, which have expanded to encompass nearly every conceivable subject; and Academy techniques are being employed with exciting results in a growing number of classrooms around the globe.
In his book The One World Schoolhouse, Salman Khan presents his views on how present education system must change and adapt itself to the needs of our rapidly changing technology oriented lifestyle. Khan digs into the topic outlining the history of education system and how the current system lags behind the intended goal. He challenges the current practice of examination system along with its concept of gradation and instead stresses on uniform and complete understanding of a concept in a time frame that is not mandated and variable. This book is an innovator’s thoughts on how the present education system should be reformed such that students with enhanced application of technology, will learn actively at their own pace, mastering a concept before moving on to the next while qualified teachers will assist the students in solving problems inside classrooms.
