Book Review: The Perfect Gentleman

White people have "love" marriages, whereas Indians and Pakistanis don't fall in love, they have arranged marriages. (How do white people always manage to find the right person, by luck?)
In The Perfect Gentleman, Imran Ahmed tells his life story: from leaving Karachi, Pakistan, at the age of one, after losing the Bonniest Baby contest - which the narrator is certain was rigged - to life growing up as a Muslim immigrant in London. As a boy, Imran is torn between his Islamic identity and his desire to embrace the West, becomes completely confused about most things, including religion, and his journey makes thoughtful, compelling, and downright delightful reading. With a unique style and unflinching honesty, The Perfect Gentleman addresses serious issues in an extraordinary light way, leaving readers both thinking deeply and laughing out loud.

The author devotes one chapter for each year of his life until he is twenty five years old, after which he steps forward, skipping years. This book covers his life till the age of forty three. Under the cover of a very humorous narrative what we get is the socioeconomic, cultural, and political situations in the then Britain coming to terms with the immigration situation. This is an irresistible, page turning memoir that is funny, humorous and often thoughtful under its layers of apparently innocent observations.
