Book Review: The Gods Of Gotham
The key to being poor in New York is to know how it’s done: you make shortcuts.
August 1845. After a fire decimates a swathe of lower Manhattan, and following years of passionate political dispute, New York City at long last forms an official Police Department. That same summer, the great potato famine hits Ireland. These events will change the city of New York forever.
Timothy Wilde is one of the victims of the great fire that had engulfed the city that summer, losing his employment and savings. Valentine, his brother, a police captain, helps him to join the newly formed police force. Timothy Wilde becomes a reluctant cop patrolling the city, monitoring to prevent illegal activities. However, when he stumbles across a ten year old girl covered in blood, he will soon find himself is search of a serial killer who is kidnapping and killing child prostitutes brutally. As the story progresses, the murderer becomes more ruthless and the murders more gruesome. Tim’s fight for justice can definitely cost him dear...
In The Gods of Gotham, Lyndsay Faye presents a detailed picture of this initial police setup in the nineteenth century New York city. Here, the characters are complex dwelling in the thoughtful and deeply researched historical setting explored by the book. The author is very much successful in presenting a gripping tale in an intriguing way.
