Book Review: Smart Phones Dumb People?

Earlier I had 5 friends whom I spoke to daily. Today I have 547 friends whom I don't even talk to in years.
Parts of India and the world live in the 21st century. Whilst many of us live in times ruled by smart phones and the internet, millions go without easy access to basics like water and electricity. We live in an opportune moment today. We have, available to us, the technological tools of the 21st century to address 19th century issues. In a fast changing world, will mankind be ruled by smart phones soon or will mankind use technology in life-changing innovations to make our societies far more equitable? Can technology be used to address the most crying needs in our society today?

In his book Smart Phones Dumb People Parthajeet Sarma outlines ways in which technology controls our personal, social and professional outlooks and overall behavioural pattern. There are numerous occasions in the book which made me smile. Courtesy: the smart and humorous tone used by the author.
Facebook has indeed given a new definition to the term 'friends'. Some of my friends whom they have never met! Facebook can ensure that you never have to meet your friends in real life anymore.
However, this book is not a book on humour. In this book, Parthajeet Sarma smartly brings out the contrast between the coexisting faces of 21st century technology and 19th century issues and problems. After the first chapter, the book strikingly tunes to a more serious tone and the author starts talking about his visions about how improvements can be made. Covering topics like Innovation, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Priorities and Corruption the book is a food for thought. The only drawback observed was, the narrative sometimes lacks cohesiveness of a book and instead reads like disjoint sets of thoughtful lectures.
