Book Review: The Twentieth Wife

But ... this was surely wrong. The Emperor would be devastated when he heard of Salim's rebellion. The prince bent his head. As he did so, for a brief moment, he remembered Mehrunnisa.
The daughter of refugees from Persia, growing up on the fringes of Emperor Akbar's opulent palace grounds, Mehrunnisa first encounters Prince Salim on his wedding day. Eight years old at the time, she decides she too will one day become Salim's wife - unaware of the great price she and her family will pay for the dream. The twentieth wife is the story of Mehrunnisa, one of India's most legendary and controversial empresses, a woman who overcame insurmountable obstacles through sheer brilliance and determination, whose love shaped the course of the Mughal Empire, Mehrunnisa - the twentieth wife of Emperor Jahangir.

The Twentieth Wife is an example of skilful blending of researched history and imaginative fiction. The book begins with the birth of Mehrunnisa and follows her life until Mehrunnisa  becomes Empress Nur Jahan. Although Mehrunnisa is the primary character of this novel, it is the history and events in Mughal India, the harem politics, the treacheries and espionage rampant in the chosen time period that provides the magnificent historical setting of this novel. The novel is gripping and fast paced and has potential to hook the reader from the very beginning. The insignificant and the significant, the royal and the common, the brutal and the benevolent - all become alive and blends seamlessly in this book.
