Book Review: The Song of King Gesar

As they trudged through the snow, the leaders followed the vulture with their eyes.
For thousand of years, bards had told the story, on the grassland and in farming villages. Jigmed himself had heard it many times  - the story of a hero, King Gesar. But they had been poor storytellers, who could only remember fragments of the song...Now as he recalled his dream, he realised that he had seen the beginning of the magnificent story.

Like all epics, this 12th century epic presents us the tale of heroic deeds of a legendary hero and a legendary place While it is impossible to review a 12th century tale with a critical perspective, it is the retelling that may be focused on. The author has brilliantly created the characters and the narrative style successfully grips the reader into the tale. Originally written in Tibetan and later translated into English, there are few occasions though where the reader may face unexpected change in pace and glitches. Overall, this book stands out as an interesting retelling of an ancient epic for the modern readers and would appeal to all readers interested in tales blended with history of a culture.
