Book Review: The Racketeer

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five. Malcolm Bannister, did not know Judge Fawcett, but he knows who killed him, and why. Bannister is a lawyer, and he is in prison. But, it’s payback time.

With this premise of murder of a Federal judge in which the murderer apparently left no clue, and the only person who knew the who-did-it of the event, being behind the bars, The Racketeer follows the familiar Grisham template in which a lawyer unexpectedly lands up in a legal trouble. The story evolves around how Malcolm Bannister, the debarred attorney, games his way out of Federal prison camp, halfway through the sentence for a crime that he had not committed. The story moves rapidly. The plot is imaginative and gripping. Clever and twisted. The master teller of legal thrillers has created yet another book that can keep the reader engaged till the very last page. Read it, not only if you are a Grisham fan, but also if thrillers thrill you.
