Book Review: A Degree In Death

"Well, someone else has died too," Mohit said mysteriously.
The midnight murder of a student in the sleepy town of Dehradun rouses everyone with suspicion and alarm. Violence is incomprehensible in this institute located at the foothills of the Himalayas. With no clues or suspects, the police are unable to catch the killer. Professor Shantanu Bose, an eminent nano-expert and Dean of Research and Development, is deeply troubled at this havoc caused to his institute. Determined to bring back the peaceful academic environment of the campus, he begins his own investigation. Fear mounts as more bodies are discovered one after the other. Soon the professor finds himself in grave danger, as he realizes he is being stalked and his every move is being observed. Yet, he persists with this investigation and discovers that the truth is more startling that what anyone could have imagined ...

As apparently interconnected serial murders disturb the otherwise peaceful setting of the Engineering college in Dehradun, the author impressively builds up tension and suspense in this whodunit mystery novel with an interesting title and a smart cover. Written in an easy and fast narrative style, the author is successful in keeping the suspense alive till the end of the book. Initially the book reads slow for a murder novel, however that is until chapter twelve after which the book gathers pace and hooks the reader. The identity of the suspect is kept evasive, forcing the reader to keep on guessing. However, from a critical reader's perspective there are few annoyances. In some cases, the dialogues sounded weak, few characters could have been more complete, and at few instances the book suffers from having excess - that does not add to the flow but might distract a section of readers.

At last I have come across a gripping murder mystery by an Indian writer!

From page one I was hooked and could not stop reading till the very end. The plot's twists and turns had me in a thrall. I kept on suspecting various people to be the murderer, but the ending was totally unexpected!

Great writing, simple language and fantastic story. A must read for all!!!
