Book Review: Heartbreak Hotel
Buffy fancied himself as a grandfather and had been rehearsing the role for years. Everyone said that it was so much easier than being a parent. The irrepressible Russel 'Buffy' Buffery has upped sticks from London and moved to a decrepit B&B in rural Wales. He needs to fill the beds, and what better way than with 'Courses for Divorces', his new money-making wheeze. Those checking in include: Harold, whose wife has run off with a younger woman; Amy, who's been unexpectedly dumped by her (not-so-) needy boyfriend and Andy, the hypochondriac postman whose girlfriend is much too much for him to handle. Under Buffy's tutelage, these causalities of the marriage-go-round find themselves re-learning all those skills they never thought they'd need again, and a whole lot more besides...
In Heartbreak Hotel, Deborah Moggach introduces a group of lonely hearts who takes the story forward. Although love and loneliness in later life forms the primary focus of this book, Heartbreak Hotel is a humorous story to read. The twists in the story are somewhat predictable but the style of narration and embedded humour make this a sweet novel in which a gentle tale keeps moving forward.
