Book Review: Rough Passage To The Bodhi Tree
The Buddha now wanted to revisit the cremation ground in the forest where he'd spent a few days with the sadhu, his first mentor. It was quite dark by the time he reached the forest.A prince once gave up everything to attain inner peace, creating the world's most treasured and well-known coming-of-age story: Siddhartha's journey to Enlightenment; his transformation from a mere mortal to an enlightened soul. Join Siddhartha, the 'brooding dove', as he wins Yasodhara's hand in marriage, challenges his father-in-law, celebrates with wine and festivities and then, to everyone's surprise and consternation, renounces it all. Seeking the path of the wise, he laid the noble path for us. This is the story of how an ordinary mortal came to see the light.
Rough Passage to the Bodhi Tree is essentially a fiction based on the story of transformation of prince Siddhartha into Lord Buddha. Written in very simple language Shiv K Kumar has presented a vivid and gripping tale that has potential to hook the reader. Lord Buddha's teachings on compassion, non-violence and good actions are effortlessly injected into the story. However the ending, particularly the conversation with Yama, sounded to me as subtle departure from the tune of rest of this book. Apart from this, Rough Passage to the Bodhi Tree is definitely a readable book.
